Natural Remedies for Infant Acid Reflux

Natural remedies for infant acid reflux may help your baby.

Anyone can have these attacks -- even babies! Stomach acids are supposed to stay in the stomach, but sometimes they can back up into the esophagus. There is a ring of muscle at the  bottom of the esophagus that usually keep stomach acids in the stomach. But when acid doesn’t stay where it belongs, it can be a very unpleasant experience. It really burns! Imagine how much pain could this condition be causing your baby!

Since your baby can't talk yet, how can you tell if he or she is suffering
from infant acid reflux?

Your baby may spit up after eating for one thing. He or she may vomit after meals. Babies cough and are irritable when suffering from acid reflux. Your baby may also have trouble eating. He or she may also have trouble sleeping and may experience a lack of appetite as well. If your baby has bad breath, you can suspect this condition.

With most babies it is not a serious problem. In fact, it usually doesn't continue to be a problem as your baby grows up.

But here are some symptoms that can cause concern:

One severe symptom is the inability to hold down enough nourishment. Of course that causes your baby to be slow to gain the normal weight that he or she needs to develop properly. Difficulty breathing is another symptom that should be cause for concern.

Another serious problem is forceful vomiting -- especially if it looks as though there is blood in the fluid.

But these all can also be symptoms of other problems, so you need to take your baby to the doctor.

It might be wise to feed your baby more often and give him or her smaller amounts of food at a time. You might also try adding a tablespoon of rice cereal to small amounts of milk.

Don't give your baby too much to eat at one time and be sure to burp your baby after small amounts of milk have been swallowed. One thing that causes infants to suffer from acid reflux is that their main diet is liquid and they mostly remain on their backs. So it's wise after they have eaten keep them in an upright position for a while.

These symptoms can be very painful, especially for infants who can’t even tell you what’s wrong with them.

So be observant and check to see if your baby experiences the symptoms in this article.

Take your infant to your doctor for regular checkups and report any of these symptoms if your baby is experiencing them.

The good news is that if acid reflux is causing your infant’s discomfort, he or she will usually outgrow it in the not-too-distant future.
